The Challenge
QualTech was asked to supply and to support on-site technicians for the ATM Refresh project for LaSalle Bank/Bank of America. This work includes the removing existing routers and switches and the installation of new routers and switches at 2,800 locations.
LaSalle Bank ATM’s are being transformed to the Bank of America network and moving them from a frame based network to a MPLS based network. These ATM’s are connected to a frame relay circuit using fractional T1 Inter Exchange Carrier and 56k/64k Inter Exchange Carrier based circuits. There are about 592 ATM’s that will be converted.
The Response
Bank of America built its network core on Cisco 12000 Series routers. Cisco 12000 Series routers offer scalable, intelligent routing solutions that scale from 2.5 Gbps/slot to n x 10 Gbps/slot capacity, enabling IP/Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) core networks. With quality of service (QoS) capabilities and support for Frame Relay transport, the Cisco 12000 Series routers enable Bank of America to support IP/MPLS traffic and transport existing traffic through the core.
With the choice of equipment decided and agreed to and QualTech’s Project Executive team, in place, QualTech obtained the necessary information, data, decisions and approvals, required to develop a plan leveraging our national rollout and technical deployment experience.

Our Process and Strategy Included
But Was Not Limited to:
- Site Surveys
- Local staging of the new hardware and transportation of the hardware to job site,
- Removal of existing routers and switches,
- Physical installation of the new equipment,
- Providing on-site support of the remote engineer performing the logical integration of the device to the network.
- During the upgrade, we were able to copy our
existing configuration, bring it into a text editor, search and replace
the interface numbers to match the new interface numbers, and paste (or
TFTP) the configuration up to the new router.
The Result
After we upgraded the router, users noticed a
marked increase in performance. Reliability of ATM traffic has improved
dramatically as well. We estimate that we've reduced the number of ATM
and network-related outages that were occurring, significantly.
